I bought this to light my basement gym. Lights are EXTREMELY bright. Installation took about 2 hours, but was very easy to do on my own with simply a screwdriver.
My basement is unfinished with the ceiling being all rafters. Kit includes 25 LED lights with a number of V and Y joints, enough that if you use the standard 5-hexagonal design you'll end up with 1 extra V and 1 extra Y connector, and 1 extra LED bar. Those connectors are the only thing that you can mount with, there is a hole for a small screw on the side of each connector to mount to a celing. Included are lots of screws, dry wall anchors, and zip ties. Also included is a power cable that plugs into a wall socket, and another power cable that you can hardwire into your light fixture (this is what I did)
The Good:
Lights are VERY bright, with various light temperature settings - 2700K, 3000K, 4000K, 5000K, 6500K. This feature in itself sets this kit apart from anything else I've found. Most of these kits are set to a standard 6500K which I find really bothers my eyes. I prefer the warmer color. You usually could get the full RGB option, but they tend to not be nearly as bright. There's a remote that you can use to pick a color temperature, set an auto-off (1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours) turn on and off. The timer is nice, since this light kit burns 192W while it's on, but I haven't tested it yet. The cool thing is, if you turn these off at the switch, the LEDs remember your settings! You don't have to constantly reset the color temperature every time you turn them on, which is a feature other manufacturers leave out.
The not-so-good:
- 1 LED bar was not working. When I first powered on the assembled unit, this one bar flickered dimly for a moment, then turned off. Fortunately, I didn't need all 25, so I'm not missing it.
- Mounting onto a rafter ceiling took some creativity. Some of the light bars are screwed right into the wood rafters. For some, I was able to run a zip-tie through a screw hole in the connectors, and mount the zip-tie to a screw on the opposite side of a rafter. For others, there's a white zip tie holding the middle of the LED bar and then that's mounted to the rafter. It's virtually invisible while the lights are turned on. I really had hoped that snap-on hanger brackets were included, that would have been an easy way to solve this problem.
- The remote is soley infrared, and you have to aim the remote at every single light bar to turn off, on, add a timer, or change the color temperature.
- There is no brightness control, except you CAN turn selected light bars off individually with the remote. I did find myself doing this the other day when the light was just a little overwhelming. If you do this, turn ALL the lights off with the light switch, and then turn on again with the switch, all the lights will turn on.
I am generally very happy with this purchase. You'll be hard-pressed to find a white-only garage/basement hex-light kit with actual color temperature settings. There are a few quirks, but considering the cost of a single kit, this is a high-value LED kit! All the extra light adds a lot of energy to my workouts, but I found I really had to give my basement gym a good cleaning after installing these. It lights everything so well, you really can see every speck of dust!
